Wonderfully aromatic, melting and densely packed with fruit. This 2019 edition, by Olivier Leflaive's splendid Pernand-Vergelesses, is a clear proof of the manufacturer's towering level. Sensual, easy-to-lick and flowery in character, but at the same time serious with both musculature and structure. An open, fruity and slightly spicy nose, with nuances of sweet strawberries, dark red cherries, cranberry juice and candied violet, surrounded by rose pepper, dried fennel, fresh soil and roasted spices. When the wine hits the tongue, it immediately feels juicy, gentle and soft like a piece of silk, to which a straight-backed tannin net quickly creeps in. Sun-ripened strawberries, dried cranberries, candied blood orange, red roses and currants, accompanied by dried cloves, crushed stones and sumac spice. An energy-filled, stoned and acid-dense finish with layers of complexity that quietly unfold. In particular, an underrated municipality in the Côte de Beaune, of which this 'Pompous Pernand' is a textbook example!
